Whilst the RAC remix of Digitalism’s “Wolves” doesn’t exactly stray from his usual formula, I have to admit, I still quite like it. It’s another light and breezy remix, with Phoenix-esque guitars and, as usual, he totally nails the chorus in a way that is whole ton more catchy than the original.
However, it is worth noting that the original track, without the vocals, is a bit of a nice return to form for Digitalism (well, for me anyway) and if there is more of where this came from that would be a very awesome thing.
Digitalism don’t really need an introduction, but I’ll do one anyway, because it’s polite and stuff. It’s two guys from Hamburg, Germany who formed in 2004 and their names are Jens “Jence” Moelle and İsmail “Isi” Tüfekçi. Originally part of the whole Kitsune movement way-back-when they were probably one of the first acts of that whole “electro-era” to become very come big. All the cool dudes played their remixes, they played massive festivals and their debut album contained heavyweight tracks such as Zdarlight, Jupiter Room and Pogo. It’s been four years since that debut, has the time been well spent?
The album starts off on a bit of iffy-note, “Stratosphere” the b-side to last years Blitz EP. It’s not like it’s awful, it’s just it’s not very interesting. It’s a b-side. Totally forgiveable as an album intro though, I guess….
The next track is the first “proper” single, “2 Hearts”. How much you enjoy this song is about how much you can tolerate Jens’ vocals. I personally think they are quite acceptable on this and melody and hook carry it through. It’s a fun indie-pop song, very much in the vain of “Pogo”. If you missed it and the bizzare video I posted a few hours ago, here it is again.
Sadly, the next track “Circles” is the unacceptable and annoying side of the Jens vocal. He’s yelping about something and a boring electro beat is bouncing around in the background. Irony is one of the more hearable lyrics is “Play it again and again”. Which you won’t. Seriously. No need.
All is forgiven though. Because the next track is “Blitz” and it’s quite good. So yeah! We’ll forgive that piece of shit we’ve just heard guys!
The following tracks are “Forrest Gump”, a passable vocal track. “Reeperbahn” which is such uber-meh nonsense I can’t even be bothered to say much about it and “Antibiotics” a KLF meets the soundtrack of videogame Wipeout and all in all is bit of disaster.
I can imagine the new Digitalism single is causing a fair bit of debate, mainly due to it’s indie-leanings. A side of the duo I haven’t minded so much, I actually think that ‘2 Hearts’ is a bit of chart hit, potentially. Very remixable too…
Moonlight Matters is the new project of Sebastiaan Vandevoorde who used to be in Villa until six weeks ago and is still in Clashes… I think. While it is most sad that another Belguise disco outfit has gone separate ways, we should look at the positive and the positive is that Moonlight Matters is already shaping up to be very awesome indeed.
Seba has already gone a got a couple of remixes under his belt, the first is of Digitalism’s “Blitz”, because of various reasons it didn’t make the vinyl but it’s still considered an official mix. An official mix of “Blitz” that is being given away for free. Quite cool? Yes. It is.
The next one is of Silver Columns and their track “Brow beaten”. This is definitely my favourite of the two remixes. It sounds like VillA but that should come as no shock. Maybe it’s a little more playful than Villa actually… Anyway, it’s rad. Don’t miss it!
It should come as no surprise that he has done a mixtape and already has a whole bunch of mixes on the way for the likes of Ellie Goulding, The Drums and Clare Maguire. He’s also just finished a track for the new Luc Besson movie and is adding the final touches to his debut ep. Phew!
