Special Report: EDM with Thad Hansen.

Calvin Harris. EDM. Skrillex. EDM. Deadmau5. EDM. Steve Aoki. EDM. Tiësto. EDM. Zedd. Man Drawer. I totally love EDM, it’s like this magical abbreviation that makes everything alright. Yum, yum, yum, EDM.
Hi there, I’m Thad Hansen. I’m guest-writing here today for Too Many Sebastians, take a seat and enjoy the vibes. I’m a veteran of the genre, was hooked on EDM since I heard the first seminal EDM track, ‘Levels‘ by Avicii. This year EDM has recieved a fair bit of criticism, mainly from losers who are jealous of our underground scene, I think it’s fine time that somebody fought back, spoke out and held their head up high for the reasons they love EDM, I am that person and I speak for all the fans of EDM. I will get us through these hard times.
One of the reasons I totally love EDM is that, for the first time, I feel like I’m part of something. It’s like, I’m connecting with these guys and they care about their fans. Historians talk about what came before EDM, the incredibly faceless drug-fueled of Electronic Dance Music, I’ve seen the videos on youtube, everybody looks poor, dirty and foreign (eugh). These historians also talk TONS about Daft ‘Whoop-de-do‘ Punk, who made a couple of ok proto-EDM tracks in the 90′s and have that whole ‘triangle‘ hand pose. However, in reality, these are two guys who hide behind masks and could not care less about their fans, epic fail.
I know what you are about to say, “But Deadmau5 wears a mask too“. However, he also lets us see behind the mask, every experience he has, he shares that with us. He tells us when he is in a relationship, he tells us when that relationship breaks up, we share the pain, EDM unites people. What can Daft ‘Overated’ Punk possibly offer to compete with that? What do I know about Daft Punk and their relationships? Nothing. They might as well be Showroom Dummies to us.
Another reason I love EDM is because of sophisticated humour it’s creators have. There is no finer example than European producer Calvin Harris, he is EDM’s answer to Larry David. For some mental reason, he’s really under-appreciated in Europe, I think it’s because European’s can’t handle the level of sophisticated humour he has. If you are a European and are thinking, “what on earth?!? He’s not a comedian that subverts the genre of EDM“, you are wrong and I will break it down for you.
1. This is an article where Calvin speaks out about EDM becoming a world of cheap one note samba‘s and DJ’s throwing champagne at one another.
2. This is his new single which is about the thing he had criticised.
And the final reason I love EDM? Steve Aoki. AZN JESUS 4 EVA BABEEEE. His antics are so crazy, next level and off the hook. He is an inspiration and totally deserving poster boy for the world of EDM.
Next Week: Thad talks about the posers who are ruining the scene.

not sure who this daft punk you site is, but otherwise very thorough.
I was a big fan of this blog.
Thanks to this article from someone whose self-important opinion of dance music (Daft Punk, fake?) takes precedent over description and good taste, I will be deleting TMS from my favorites and shaking my head in disbelief as i walk away.
^Mixmag bro with the wordplay? clever

i Totally disagree about what that guy (…who is he !?!), told about EDM. Daft Punk Fake !?? LOL… i listen EDM since 1994. And ill never see two guys like DP. They launched Homework in 1995, with a different sound of anything around in 95… DP created a style… French Touch that influenced so many other DJs/Bands, and continuing nowdays… Before DP Alive 2007 Tour who had a stage like that in EDM !?? Tell me one !?!
Skrillexs, Deadmaus, are all copys… And the copy is never better than the original !
From now on ill never read again TMS. That EDM interview as now credits at all…

Will be deleting my .rss feed, shitting on my MacBook and gouging my eyes
this is sarcasm rite?
…If we talk about copies, Daft Punk is a copy of Space. It´s not bad tell Daft Punk is ‘Overated’. Daft Punk loops a lot of classics…were is the originality in Daft Punk? Only three LP´s and one Soundtrack in…15 years? I don´t know, but Daft No Punk.
About Deadmau5… Deadmau5 play live? Sorry, but he play with Mac/Abelton Live and one synth. That isn´t play live. Look Alexander Robotnic and the Analog sessions he made in this last 3 years! That is respect!
This article could be a objetive and a serious article, Look Dj Sneak talks in a interview about “Djs actors” in Mixmag, that is interesting; but this article is superficial and maybe the writer only wants to joke.
I like turtles.
Me too.
this couldn’t have gone any better. it’s like this thread has become self aware
I don’t often comment, but just like Stereomover Ill be deleting this website from my bookmark.
1- Grow up, and understand that many subgenres fall into EDM – depending on your age or influences you might like different DJS. Don’t spit on the others.
2- Don’t make fun of europeeans, thoses bastards pretty much invented the genre (im only slightly exagerating)
3- Daft Punk is one of the pillars of what is EDM today. To make it simple, you’re a retard, and highly knowledgeable. Sorry – I tried to hold it, but you’re such a morron that I can’t anymore. Just happened.
3- if EDM sounds like the way it sounds today, you can attribute some of it to Daft Punk, plain and simple, whether you like it or not. Same for all the visuals that come with the biggest EDM shows nowadays – Daft Punk was the band that popularized it. Even some Idiots like Steve Aoki would admit it. I mean, I like a few of the things he does, but have you ever listened to the guy, watch videos, interviews, or even studio session ? He has no talent whatsoever, and he’s a complete moron. Like – a real one. check out youtube.
4- I personally don’t like Calvin Harris so much. used to, but honestly he sounds like many other DJs producing all the same shit. Like Dada Life. The guy used to have it, he sold his soul for fame and now does the same shit over and over again.
Reading this post, I’m assuming you must be pretty young. I used to listen to some terrible shit every now and then. Sorry for the harsh comments, my point is that you should report – as a blogger – not throw some shit on everyone without knowing the history of genres and artists. This post made you loose readership I can guarantee that. I’ve been coming on this website for a loooong time now – pretty much back when Shinichi osawa was releasing his first albums – I think. Then the genres that the website started posting wasn’t really my cup of tea – but still, I would come here out of respect for our early days together.
And now I’m done.
One short thing I forgot about Daft Punk. I’m 29 so I’ve probably been listening o EDM for much longer than you did. No offense, that’s just a fact. Daft Punk 10-15 years ago conquered the heart of Europeans (reminder: europeeans: English/German/French – all Pioneers in EDM – USE THE FUCKING INTERNET) and they have nothing to prove anymore. For us, they mean a lot, they’ve done a lot for the genre. back then internet was in its early days and we didn’t need to know who they were – we did not care much – and actually the fact that they were among the first ones to wear masks was a big deal, it added a lot to their charisma. (Take into account that the design of their suits aged) I know they don’t comminucate much, but they don’t need to because they have our love. Just let them work.
5 years ago I saw “Kraftwerk” at I love Techno.. yeah 2007 i think. I didn’t know them. I knew the name, I knew that they were the grandfathers of Electroni music they’re like the daft punk of the previous generation – without the fame. Well, 40.000 people were on fire, even though it didnt sound that crazy. Just ebcause they knew, and they paid respect
Are these comments serious, or are trolls trolling the trolls. Oh boy what a world we live in!
Wait, this article ISN’T a joke? Especially opening with the “I’m a veteran of the genre, was hooked on EDM since I heard the first seminal EDM track, ‘Levels‘ by Avicii.” That’s just priceless though. Why would anyone in their right mind give a shit about their favorite artist’s personal relationships? O_o
MORE! MORE!
Pretty sure that the bro with the clown nose in the first picture is a hint that this is not entirely serious. It’s pretty amazing how Daft Punk ‘fans’ just seem to be on some never-ending hunt to find material they perceive as being ‘negative’ about their idols godly powers. If anything, this post is fairly complimentary towards them and strangely sympathetic towards the likes of Deadmau5 and Calvin Harris….
Unless, I read it wrong. If so, fuck you and unsubscribe, right?
these comments have made my year
good stuff, good stuff.
if u like the music on this blog and u see the quality they drop consistently, it’s obvious the post is in jest. and it’s funny as all hell.
but not even deamau5 can give the love to his fans that the bieber does. all HAIL bieber, king of EDM!
Joke or not, you’re name is Thad. Therefore, you’re a piece of shit.
I know this post is meant to be funny, but it aint. It didnt made me laugh. I dont understand why u put this on what used to be my favorite music blog. I didnt checked TMS for some time and now I see this sarcastic shit. Just stick with the good new music from young talented producers in stead of making me annoyed when i check your blog.
From a Belgian electronic music lover.
BTW, I will not delete TMS from my favorites for this.
yeah Ali,
YOUTUBE lvl 9000²
people who don’t understand this article are def not real TMS readers so i’m pretty sure almost non of them have a dust of relevancy here.
mau5 plays live !!! hahah this made my day
Is this a joke?
@frank pmsl YOUTUBE lvl 9000²
THAD SAYS HE’S A “VETERAN” OF EDM SINCE ‘LEVELS’ WTF??? I’M SORRY BUT THAT SOUNDS SOOO RETARDED! I JUST HAVE TOO MUCH RESPECT FOR THE DAFT. YOU GUYS JUST RUINED A GREAT BLOG WITH A SINGLE POST.
I guess this is a joke… Well I have not much to add, you said everything. Just hope this article was a joke.
I have been using the term for EDM long before Avicii’s Level’s came out. I’ve always used it correctly though. As a blanket term for songs that would be considered ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC. i.e. Dubstep. Is it electronic? Do people dance to it? Nu-Disco. Is it electronic? (Mostly, except for the sample.) Do people dance to it? Electro House. Progressive. Trance. They all fall under the category of EDM. Stop taking it out on the acronym dude. The real problem is that Electro-House (and sometimes dubstep) has become a template for pop music. I don’t really have a problem with Electro House artists producing those tracks either because everyone has to make a living you know. One DJ/Producer who I think has remained above it all however, is Diplo. Sure, he’s produced quite a few mainstream hits but at the same time he maintains tracks that stay in the underground that only his true fans know.
Haha brilliant; this article comment section is pure Darwinism in action. More articles like this are needed, to shed the flotsam from your readership.
What happened to TMS? Since a long time they don’t post a thing. I really miss those new track that they always show to us…
“I’m a veteran of the genre, was hooked on EDM since I heard the first seminal EDM track, ‘Levels‘ by Avicii.”
I almost threw up. This is the most ignorant post about electronic music I have ever read. How can you say Daft Punk is fake? Calvin Harris’ last good album was Ready For The Weekend, and I don’t see him making anything better at this point. Steve Aoki is just a public figure, no one really goes to see him without being on something. It just doesn’t work.
This was my first and last visit to this website.
haha… I get it now!!! This was actually realllly funny hahaha!!! “Historians talk about what came before EDM…” hahahah holy shitballs.. this article is chocked full of ironi..
TROLOLOLOL
Aside from everything else I don’t really get how you’re comparing Skrillex with DP. Totally different genre. Skrillex isn’t even EDM so it doesn’t belong in a post about EDM. Calling a band fake for not revealing their sex life like Deadmau5 does is a farce. They are first and foremost MUSICIANS. I don’t want to know about their shitty relationships. I care about their music. Being about the music is the last thing that should qualify a musician as ‘Fake.”
