Kido Yoji is 21 year old disco producer from Tokyo, Japan. He’s only been producing for a couple of years but has already done remixes for acts like The Lowbrows, Crystal Fighters, Walter Sobcek, CSS and has supported guys like 2 Many Dj’s and Siriusmo as a DJ.

Last month saw the release of his first ep, “Call A Romance”. We’ve already mentioned the title track in the past, but, if you missed it, take a listen….
Call A Romance (Album Ver) by Kido Yoji
The EP is comprised of 6 originals and 1-3 remixes (depending on the version you buy). It treads a very similar path to the style of disco-pop you’ve heard from the likes of Breakbot and Chromeo over the years. The lighter and cute side. At times, the EP might get a little too close to the sound of the aforementioned artists but for the most part, the strength of the melody in “More Than Real” and the energy in “Hot and Cold” outweigh the negatives.
The ‘bonus’ remixes are a bit of mixed bag, with the Bazz remix of “More Than Real” just sounding a bit like.. “yo, remember Justice?” and not a patch on his remix of Kido’s “Orion“. While the Ugly Kids remix of “Am 3:33” is a bit better, it’s a bit random, the second half is pretty nice though.

The best remix comes from Walter Sobcek, who turn “Call A Romance” into a moody & dramatic nightdrive song. It’s full of tension and the way it builds is very awesome.

And whilst it didnt make the release, the Blue Satellite remix of “More Than Real” is certainly worth a mention. Similar vibe to the remix he did of Bag Raiders/Flight Facilities. Guitar funk-tastic and a free download.

Overall, it would be a bit of a stretch for me to recommend you import the CD, however, it’s certainly worth a download on iTunes.

The Knocks!

i can`t help myself. this reminds me too much of anoraak. i think there are a lot of sounds and a lot of structure is stolen by anoraak. at least of two songs:
“Call A Romance2 by Kido Yoji = “Try Me” by Anoraak
“More Than Real” by Kido Yoli = the start of “Above Your Head” by Anoraak
You arent the only person to have said this. I think the Call A Romance similarity is a bit tenious, because then it’s Breakbot’s “Make You Mine” which Anoraak has ripped off and then Make You Mine rips off etc.
“More Than Real” sounds like the menu select of Final Fantasy VII (and other Final Fantasy games) and that came along time before Anoraak.
Dont get me wrong,.. I find similarities between songs at time a little too close too.
